Golden Link Presents Midwinter Music Madness: Concert by Acoustic Duo Home Remedy with a Pre-Concert Hootenanny & Chili Supper
Rochester, NY – Beat the winter blahs with an afternoon and evening filled with the smells of good cooking and the sounds of great music. The Ithaca-based duo Home Remedy features original songs by Lydia Garrison on fiddle, banjo, and guitar, paired with Rosie Newton’s emotive and powerful singing and playing on fiddle, accordion, and guitar. They both come from the old-time music tradition, which means they know how to put their heads down and get in the groove with fast and rocking fiddle and banjo tunes. Home Remedy will perform in concert for the Golden Link Folk Singing Society on Saturday, February 8, 2024, at 7:30 pm at Greece Baptist Church, 1230 Long Pond Road, Rochester NY 14626.
Before the concert, bring your instruments and voices and join in Midwinter Music Madness. A hootenanny featuring participatory singing starts at 4:00 pm, then from 5:30-7:00 pm, there will be a Chili Supper – with meat, vegetarian, and gluten-free options.
Audiences may know Rosie from Richie & Rosie (with Richie Stearns) or Rose and the Bros and Lydia from The Darling Clementines or The TurtleDuhks – with two members of the Juno Award-winning Canadian band The Duhks. Besides playing original songs and old-time and Cajun fiddle tunes, they sprinkle in a few songs from the folk canon. They put their hearts into their music and find a deep joy in it.
Rosie and Lydia were both fortunate to grow up in families where music was part of the culture. For Rosie it was old-time music, Scottish & Irish music, and Classical. Rosie attended Ithaca College for viola performance and soon became a rising star in the local Ithaca traditional music scene.
Lydia went with her mother to music camps and festivals, where she was immersed in Cajun, Zydeco, and old-time music. The local GrassRoots festival became Lydia’s musical church, where she fell in love with bands like Donna the Buffalo and The Jennie Stearns Band for their groove and songwriting.
"Home Remedy: Rosie Newton and Lydia Garrison sing new and old songs, with a country flavor, and excellent harmonies."
- Bound For Glory
"Both Lydia and Rosie grew up with deep connections to folk music traditions, and instrumental and vocal skills form an integral part of their performance."
– Watkins Glen Fiddlers’ Gathering

Greece Baptist Church, 1230 Long Pond Rd, Rochester, NY 14626
Georgia-born and Cambridge, England-based guitarist, singer, and songwriter Brooks Williams is a leading light on the acoustic roots music scene, with more than 33 recordings and appearances at countless venues and festivals for more than three decades. From Celtic Connections to Cropredy, Glastonbury to Philadelphia, Kerrville to Winnipeg, there are very few stages Brooks Williams hasn’t played.
Brooks Williams’ guitar skills are evident as he effortlessly slides in and out of folk, blues, and country. It comes as no surprise he is listed in the Top 100 Acoustic Guitarists. He wraps that guitar playing around songs with rich narratives about gold prospectors, guitar players, motorcycle riders, golden palominos, and ne’er-do-wells, and sings them with a voice you melt into. His songs are rooted in tradition, wryly observed, and relevant.
